Home Schooling Your Aspergers Child

When faced with questions about how to educate your son or daughter, the challenges become all that much more difficult if you have a child with Aspergers or High-Functioning Autism. It's Aspergers Syndrome! How do you share the news?

Finding out that one’s child has been diagnosed with Aspergers or High-Functioning Autism can be distressing for some parents. Moms and dads may naturally feel guilty even though there isn’t anything yet known that could have prevented the disorder. Through all of this comes the need for telling others about the syndrome and how it affects the child.

If you are faced with having to tell those around you that your child has Aspergers or HFA, the first thing you want to do is understand and read about the condition so that you can answer questions appropriately and truly be an advocate for your child.

Teaching Active Listening Skills to Aspergers Kids

Children with Aspergers generally don’t have the innate ability to exchange eye contact or use appropriate facial expressions when interacting with others. This can make them seem odd when interacting with both adults and their peers. Some of the way they interact with others can cause teasing or other behaviors that cause the Aspergers child to feel lonely or left out of the conversations of others. Aspergers children often can tell that something is wrong with their interactions with others, and their self-esteem can suffer as a result.

Dealing with Obsessions and Compulsive Behaviors in Aspergers Children

Kids with Aspergers often must deal with obsessions and compulsive behavior. While many of the core issues with Aspergers can’t be cured, there are ways parents can cope with such issues and learn to overcome some of them.

Supporting your Aspergers Child to Make Friends

When a "neurotypical" youngster makes friends, moms and dads are not often involved in the choice of the friend or the facilitation of the friendship. But, the parents of an kid with Asperger's or HFA should be  active participants in helping him make and keep solid friends.

Part of the process involves concretely teaching the youngster how an "average" (for the lack of a better term) friend should act. Teaching him or her politeness, restraint in some situations, and how to talk and establish good eye contact with others will help this youngster learn skills that aren’t innate to his or her development.

Coping with Obsessions and Rituals in Aspergers Kids

One of the hallmarks of Asperger's is the development of obsessive thinking and the performing of ritual behaviors done to reduce stress and anxiety. This type of behavior can later meet the criteria in adulthood for OCD. Kids on the autism spectrum often have an obsessive interest in a particular subject, and they may be very inflexible in their habits and may rigidly adhere to certain routines or rituals. These obsessions and compulsions are believed to be biological in origin, which means that it is very difficult to go to therapy or just talk the child out of the rituals.

Behavior Management for Aspergers Kids

Kids with Asperger’s have no greater permission to misbehave than "typical" kids. But, the way parents gain control over their other kids’ behavior will differ with an Aspergers child, mostly because of differences in how he/she thinks and how he/she perceives rewards and discipline.
