13 year old Aspie daughter had her day in court...

Hello Mr. Hutten,

I would like to share with you and you can feel free to share with others something wonderful that happened to our family yesterday.

After almost a year and half of being bullied, harassed and assaulted on the school bus, our 13 year old Aspie daughter had her day in court with the perpetrator (another 13 year old bully). My daughter was terrified to testify, but I assured her that her family was there to protect her. We also were blessed to have a witnessed to one of the horrific beatings that my daughter endured come forward. She was terrified as well.

The States Atty's office in Upper Marlboro, Maryland brought forth the case. It was a long process, without any assistance from the school system. Anyway, to make a long story short, the bully was found guilty on all three charges of second degree assault. The judge remanded her into custody on the spot. She was taken away in handcuffs. There was high drama in the courtroom. It had been such a long and lonely process, I did not know what to expect, but imagine my daughter witnessing the detention and handcuffing of her tormentor in front of her...it was amazing.

While it is not a joyous occasion to see a 13 year old child in handcuffs, I am blinded by the many, many long months of harassment and assaults that my child suffered and continues to suffer. This is a partial victory for my daughter Amina. Please include this in your newsletter for others to see. The Justice System can and does work. Thanks, Kim.

  2. My Aspie son is 18 now and was bullied relentlessly throughout grade and high school. While it broke my heart to see him suffer, I never gave thought to bringing charges against his tormentors. Reading this story makes me realize what a terrible mistake we made. I wish you the best of luck and congratulations to your daughter. It's a great lesson showing that the system does sometimes work.

  5. Bullying is so prevelant in the schools! My own daughter, who's 16, was being bullied by another student. He kept telling she should kill herself and get it over with. Our problem is that our daughter has many phobias so sometimes students are talking about her and sometimes not. She's become so tired of telling the teachers about her encounters and either the student gets away with it because our daughter is not believed or she misunderstood what the student was saying to her. In any case, I stepped in and the student was "dealt" with. I'm still keeping in touch with her teachers and the school counselor to ensure that this doesn't happen again. More schools are coming up with a "no tolerance" policy on bullying for this very fact!!

  9. Ugh! What an awful situation. I am glad your daughter got to have that conclusion. Hopefully the adults who should have been responsible are also dealt with appropriately.

  10. We strongly suspect our 10yr old has mild Aspergers and he was also bullied in school. We have since removed him from that environment as the school administration seemed to be part of the problem, not the cure! It is a beautiful thing for your child to be able to see that it is not always ignored and that sometimes the bullies get what's coming to them. Hopefully that 13yo will come out of the experience with a new perpective.

  11. and most of the time you have to deal with people that try to write off such behaviour as 'part of life' and that 'people need to learn to stick up for themselves'

  12. Glad your daughter got justice. I feel sorry for the other girl as well even though what she did was truly terrible she must of experienced something hard in her life to make her turn out like that. Maybe she will now eventually learn a tough lesson and come out a better person!
